Circe TV Show Moodboard, Circe in Art History

My Development

Although in exile, Circe was given a beautiful palace fit for a goddess due to the high status of her father, Helios. I focussed on designing Circe's kitchen and gardens as that is the space where she develops her witchcraft and creates major potions throughout the story.

Through my creative development, both of these spaces eventually merged into one. In the book, she feels entrapped in the world of the gods, "a golden cage is still a cage". However, in her exile, she learns to enjoy her solitude and freedom from judgement as she develops her witch powers; "my garden climbed the walls of my house... I left the shutters open by then. I did what I liked." Hence, this space should visually reflect her increasing sense of freedom and confidence in herself and her abilities.

An HBO series adaption of Madeleine Miller’s Greek Mythology novel, “Circe”.

Circe is the nymph daughter of the mighty god, Helios, and has always been seen as strange amongst the others in the immortal world. When it is found that she has powers of witchcraft, she is banished to the island of Aiaia in the Mediterranean. This is where she hones her craft; casting spells, gathering strange herbs & taming wild beasts.

The use of ionic columns, entablatures and Greek ornamentation have strong links to classical sources as well as Greek revival architecture which firmly places the audience into the time period. The palace architecture is married with fantasy elements such as a tree that Circe grows and develops to create a spiral staircase, balcony and wooden shelves to store her many herbs and potions.

The focal point of the kitchen is the towering hearth which glows as Circe creates her potions. It provides exciting lighting opportunities along with the natural light sources of the central skylight, large front window, alcove windows and the opening to the garden.
